Why your phone list costs you more than you think
Every month, 2 to 3% of the phone numbers in your database go dead. People switch carriers, abandon prepaid accounts, change jobs. You keep paying to message them. Here is how to stop.
Silent
The person on the other end never knows a check happened
Instant
Results return in under a second per number
Global
Coverage across 200+ countries
Where your budget actually goes
When you send an SMS campaign to 1,000 numbers and 250 of them are dead, you just burned 25% of your campaign budget on messages that never reached a human. Your SMS platform bills per message regardless of delivery. Your dialer connects your agents to carrier intercept messages instead of prospects. Your sender reputation degrades because carriers track how often you hit disconnected lines.
This is not a technology problem. It is a budget problem. You already bought or built the list. You already pay for the messaging platform. The only thing between you and cleaner campaigns is knowing which numbers are worth contacting.
How carrier-level checks work
Every mobile carrier maintains a database of every SIM card on its network. When a number is active, the carrier knows. When a number is disconnected, the carrier knows. When a number moved to a different network, the carrier knows. These are called HLR (Home Location Register) queries, and they are live, not cached snapshots. Every check reflects the network's current state.
A carrier-level check asks the carrier directly: "Is this number currently active on your network?" The carrier answers yes or no. The phone never rings. The person never knows. The entire process takes less than a second.
This is not new technology. Carriers use these checks internally every day for call routing and fraud prevention. NumTrue makes them accessible to anyone with a list of phone numbers.
In most of the world we ask the carrier directly. In a handful of countries, including the US, Mexico, China, and Brazil, carriers do not open that door to outside queries, so we check the same portability registries carriers use internally. You still get carrier, line type, ported status, and disposable detection instantly, just not a live ping.
What you learn about each number
Reachable or not
Is the number live and able to receive calls or messages right now. The only question that determines whether you spend money contacting this number.
Line type
Mobile, landline, or VOIP. SMS only works on mobile. Do not pay to text a landline.
Current carrier
Which network the number is on. Know if a number changed carriers since you last checked.
Disposable detection
Is this a burner or temporary number. These destroy deliverability and often indicate fraud.
Ported status
Did this number move from one carrier to another. Old data says AT&T. Reality says T-Mobile.
Country
Where the number is registered. Segment campaigns by region or filter out numbers outside your market.
What you get per country
You'll know whether this number is live, which carrier it is on, whether it is mobile or landline, and whether it is a disposable number. The level of detail depends on the country and the agreements we have with carriers there.
A note on the US, Mexico, China, and Brazil. Carriers there do not allow live network queries from outside providers, so we check portability registries instead. You still get carrier, line type, ported status, and disposable detection, just not a live reachability ping. That is enough to know whether to send an SMS and whether the number is a burner.
What list decay costs you
Phone databases age badly. People switch carriers. Prepaid accounts get abandoned. Work numbers change when people switch jobs. At 2 to 3% decay per month, a list purchased six months ago could be 15% or more dead.
You do not see this cost on any invoice. Your SMS platform bills you the same whether the number is live or dead. Your dialer cycles through the same dead lines. Your sales team burns morale on disconnected tones. The cost is real but invisible. Running a check before every campaign turns an invisible cost into a visible saving.
